The last several years have seen many of our favorite ’90s films adapted into Broadway musicals. Many of these, such as “Mean Girls,” “Groundhog Day,” “Mrs. Doubtfire,” and “Pretty Woman,” have been a success. The announcement that “The Baby-Sitters Club” will also be getting the Broadway treatment has thrilled fans of the book series.
It’s been 25 years since the last “Baby-Sitters Club” book was released, and we’re honestly a bit surprised that it’s taken this long. But the more we learn about who’s involved in the musical, the more we believe it’s been worth the wait.
‘The Baby-Sitters Club’ Returns in a Vibrant New Musical Adventure
“The Baby-Sitters Club” started in 1986 with the release of Ann M. Martin’s book, “Kristy’s Great Idea.” We were introduced to friends Kristy, Claudia, Mary Anne, and Stacey as they navigated issues related to friendship, family, and school. And of course, babysitting.
“The Baby-Sitters Club Musical” is being developed by TWTheatricals, based on a book by Kate Wetherhead. She is best known for writing the musical adaptation of “The Devil Wears Prada.” Mark Sonnenblick, best known for the “Kpop Demon Hunters” hit song “Golden,” will be doing the music and lyrics. Annie Tipp (“Octet,” “Three Houses”) will be in charge of the choreography and directing.
The musical will take place 12 years after the babysitters disbanded the club. The four now 25-year-old women return to Stoneybrook, CT.
“The young women realize over the course of the show that the reunion not only presents an opportunity to revisit defining moments of their past, but to answer critical questions that have surfaced in their present-day lives: questions of identity, career, relationships and fulfillment,” the synopsis reads.
“We look forward to bringing the BSC’s themes of friendship, growing pains, independence and self-discovery to a live audience,” Wetherhead told Deadline. “So that both young people and adults can see for themselves (or their former selves) that they are not alone in the grand adventure of ‘growing up.’”
The Musical Marks the Fourth Adaptation from the Books
The series produced more than 250 books between 1986 and 2000. Only a small number were written by the original author, Martin. It also inspired a television series that aired from 1990 to 1993. Following that was a 1995 film starring Schuyler Fisk and Rachael Leigh Cook. In 2020, Netflix kicked off a new era of “The Baby-Sitters Club,” but the series was cancelled after two seasons.
“I love musicals and am excited to see the adventures of Kristy, Claudia, Mary Anne, and Stacey come to life on stage,” Martin said. “I’m humbled by the ongoing popularity of the series, and couldn’t be more thrilled by this news.”
