The Family Beloved Author Sophie Kinsella Leaves Behind After Her Private Cancer Battle

Bestselling author Sophie Kinsella, known to millions for her “Shopaholic” series and its heroine Becky Bloomwood, has died at 55. Her family announced the news on Instagram.

“We are heartbroken to announce the passing this morning of our beloved Sophie (aka Maddy, aka Mummy). She died peacefully, with her final days filled with her true loves: family, music, warmth, Christmas, and joy.

“We can’t imagine what life will be like without her radiance and love of life. Despite her illness, which she bore with unimaginable courage, Sophie counted herself truly blessed – to have such wonderful family and friends, and to have had the extraordinary success of her writing career. She took nothing for granted and was forever grateful for the love she received.”

The post concluded: “She will be missed so much our hearts are breaking.”

Sophie Kinsella’s Family, Marriage, and Motherhood

Kinsella married Henry Wickham in 1991, after meeting at Oxford. Wickham, a former schoolmaster and later head of Lockers Park School, became instrumental in managing her business affairs as her career flourished. Together they raised five children: sons Freddy, 28, Hugo, 26, Oscar, 19, Rex, 15, and daughter Sybella, 14.

Though Kinsella protected her family’s privacy, she occasionally reflected on motherhood. Speaking to the Irish Independent in 2012, she said she had always liked the idea of a big family but embraced the natural spacing of her children. She also recalled the reactions she received when she learned she was having a daughter after four boys. “It’s a challenge, but bring it on,” she said with her signature optimism.

Kinsella often credited Wickham for carrying her through her cancer battle. During a 2024 appearance on “Lorraine,” she said, “Honestly I couldn’t have survived [without him] but it was hard for him… I think that’s where he showed his greatest love for me.”

A Literary Career That Defined a Generation

Sophie’s publishing journey began while she worked as a financial journalist. She wrote her first novel, “The Tennis Party,” at age 24 under her real name, Madeleine Wickham, and went on to publish six more books before the world met Sophie Kinsella.

Her breakthrough came in 2000 with “The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic,” introducing Becky Bloomwood—a character The Bookseller called “funny, feisty and without a trace of guile.” Over the next 25 years, Sophie wrote eight more “Shopaholic” novels and an additional 18 books across adult fiction, YA and children’s literature.

In April 2024, Sophie revealed her diagnosis of glioblastoma. “At the moment all is stable and I am feeling generally very well,” she wrote. She thanked her readers, adding, “The wonderful response to The Burnout has really buoyed me up during a difficult time.”

Her final message to fans reflected the generosity and warmth that defined her career: “To everyone who is suffering from cancer in any form I send love and best wishes… the support and care of those around you means more than words can say.”
