Alicia Silverstone got emotional while honoring her late mother, Didi Silverstone, during a special “Clueless” 30th anniversary event in Pleasantville, New York. Speaking at a Q&A at The Jacob Burns Film Center on Nov. 12, the actress shared a heartfelt story about her mom’s brief but meaningful cameo in the 1995 film.
“In the wedding scene, my mom is in the back. And she died this night six years ago,” the 49-year-old told the audience, as captured in a social media video. “It’s really lovely to have that because I love and miss her. It’s very moving to see that moment.” She added that she was by her mother’s side when she passed in 2019 and believes Didi “would be really happy that this is happening because she liked all of this.”
The actress said the experience of revisiting the beloved movie on such a personal date made the evening feel like both a celebration and a tribute. “Clueless has been amazing,” she shared. “It delights people. It’s really nice to share something with people that they are delighted by,” per E! News.
Remembering Her Mother’s Influence
Silverstone has long spoken about the profound impact her mother had on her life and career. In a 2021 blog post, she described Didi as someone who “lived lightly on the earth,” loved animals, and taught her not to be materialistic. “My mother lived lightly on the earth, she planted seeds in me, she loved animals, and she taught me to never be materialistic or waste anything,” Silverstone wrote at the time.
In May 2024, Silverstone honored her mom on Instagram, sharing a series of throwback photos with the caption, “My mom! I wish I could have her back! I hope all the mamas out there are feeling all of the love today.” She also reflected on how her mother’s presence extended to her early days on the “Clueless” set, revealing that Didi formed a friendship with Sharon Murphy, the mother of the late actress Brittany Murphy.
“I loved working with [Brittany],” Silverstone told Entertainment Weekly in 2023. “Our mothers were both around on set a lot together. It was nice how when my mom came, her mom was there, too.”
A Full-Circle Moment with the Clueless Legacy

Nearly three decades after the film’s release, “Clueless” remains a defining part of Silverstone’s career and soon, she’ll return to it once more. In April, Variety reported that Silverstone is set to reprise her role as Cher Horowitz in a sequel series currently in development at Peacock. The new project will serve as a direct follow-up to the 1995 film, with Silverstone also joining as an executive producer alongside original writer-director Amy Heckerling and producer Robert Lawrence.
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight in August, Silverstone said she hopes the upcoming series will “honor the original movie that we love and also bring something new to it.” She added, “I never thought that was something I would do because I wouldn’t wanna mess up this thing that we all love so much. But we will do our very best — and I believe we will execute that goal.”
For Silverstone, “Clueless” has always been more than a breakout role. As she told the crowd at the anniversary event, seeing her mother in the film remains deeply meaningful: “It’s really lovely to have that because I love her and miss her.”
