Hallmark star B.J. Britt almost didn’t make it to the first day of filming his new Christmas movie, “Tidings for the Season,” premiering on November 16, 2025. Britt told EntertainmentNow that the day before he was scheduled to fly from Los Angeles to Vancouver to film opposite Tamera Mowry-Housley, his car was totaled when another driver hit him.
Britt quickly realized that his vehicle wasn’t the only thing damaged. His left hand was badly injured, he said, split open between his ring and pinky fingers. But before being rushed to the hospital, Britt called his agent from the accident scene, insisting that the show would go on.
B.J. Britt Says He Knew Immediately He Didn’t Want His Accident to Impact Filming
HallmarkExplaining the accident, Britt told EntertainmentNow, “A lady pulled out in front of me and boom! Airbags deployed, but I was like, ‘Ok, everything’s fine,’ until I noticed there’s blood on the airbags. I looked all over, and then I saw my finger was just (hanging).”
Feeling no pain yet with adrenaline pumping through his veins, Britt immediately called his agent from the scene while waiting for the ambulance to arrive.
“I said, ‘Jay, do me a favor and call production,'” he recalled. “‘I got in a car accident. I’m good, but my hand is kind of messed up.’ Jay said, ‘How bad is it?’ and I said, ‘It’s pretty bad.'”
He then got a call from “Tidings for the Season” executive producer Ryan M. Murphy, who also produced “The Groomsmen” starring Britt, Tyler Hynes, and Jonathan Bennett. Remembering Murphy’s call, Britt recalled, “Ryan was like, ‘I heard you got in an accident! I’ll fly down to you. What do I need to do? Do I need to push back production?'”
Britt continued, “But I was like, ‘No, no, no, I will be there. Don’t worry about me. I can do the movie, we just gotta figure out this whole hand thing.'”
B.J. Britt Admits He Was ‘Bawling Like a Baby’ From the Pain
GettyThough the paramedics confirmed Britt didn’t have a concussion, which would have kept him from filming based on production protocols, he did require 15 stitches at the hospital, he told EntertainmentNow.
Until he got to the hospital, Britt said he was feeling no pain. But when they had to numb the area for stitches, putting “the needle in the webbing” between his fingers, Britt exclaimed, “That’s when I started crying! I just bawled. I am bawling like a baby!”
The pain was excruciating, Britt said, but he knew he “had to get on that plane to get to work” the next day. Everyone on set was concerned when he arrived, but because it was a Christmas movie, Britt knew they’d be able to hide the injury with winter gloves and that, while playing a news anchor, he could keep one hand behind his back or in his pocket while interviewing and reporting onscreen.
“So when you see this movie,” Britt laughed, “just watch the hand!”
B.J. Britt Explained the Most Painful Part of Filming ‘Tidings for the Season’
HallmarkThe biggest issue, Britt told EntertainmentNow, was that he really wanted to fold his hands together in scenes at the news desk, as he’d seen many news anchors do while delivering their stories. Murphy encouraged Britt to adapt so as not to stretch his stitches, but Britt was committed to sticking with his vision.
“So every time I was at that desk, I’d slowly (clasp) my hands together and I was literally splitting my fingers open again. I’m sweating, and you could see a little blood trickle down. I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, the things we do to make (these movies). I can’t still remember the pain, because I’m starting to sweat just thinking about it!”
Why put himself through more pain? Britt explained, “‘Cause if I had not done that, I would’ve looked back on it and I would’ve been mad at myself for not doing it the way that I wanted it to look. Any project I do, I don’t ever want to feel like I left anything on the table.”
After filming the movie, Britt went to get his stitches removed in Los Angeles, but wound up getting an infection. After antibiotics and months of hand therapy to regain strength and use of his fingers, Britt said he’s on the mend and happy for all to see the movie that was both a pain and a joy to create.
Hallmark Channel’s “Tidings for the Season” premieres on November 16 at 8 p.m. Eastern time.
