Before Zoey Deschanel began her relationship with HGTV star Jonathan Scott, she had two children with ex-husband Jacob Pechenik. Like many stars, she has shared some of her work with her kids, but there’s one film Elise and Charlie aren’t too keen on: 2003’s “Elf.”
“They’ve seen part of it, but they weren’t really that into watching it,” she explained in an E! News interview. Although plenty of fans love the holiday flick, Deschanel said it just wasn’t her kids’ jam. “I think it was a little weird,” she said. Although “Elf” may not be part of the family’s holiday traditions anytime soon, Deschanel has shared other fun activities she enjoys with her children this time of year.
Deschanel Enjoys Baking Christmas Cookies with Elise and Charlie
GettyIn 2024, Deschanel told ScaryMommy about some of her favorite holiday traditions. “I love singing Christmas carols,” she said. “I love baking cookies with the kids. I just love spending time with family.” Her love of Christmas cookies is well-documented, and she even appeared alongside Scott in 2020 with cookies shaped like the cute couple.
Aside from baking cookies, Deschanel also enjoys seeing the happiness that the holidays bring for Charlie and Elise. “I think the best part about Christmas, now being grownups, is just seeing it through the eyes of our kids,” she told People in 2022. “They’re really so excited, and everything is kind of wonderful.” In the same interview, she noted that cooking is one of her passions, especially during her downtime.
As for “Elf,” there may be some hope for the holiday classic in the future. As Deschanel told E! News, peer encouragement may help make the film more popular in her household. “A bunch of my daughter’s friends were talking about it,” the actress said. “So now she wants to watch it with her friends.”
She is Thankful for Scott’s Role in Making the Holidays Special
GettyBlended families can be challenging, especially around the holidays. But Scott has been right by Deschanel’s side for Christmases with her children for several years now. “Jonathan and I are really looking forward to having a wonderful Christmas with [my kids] and with our families,” Deschanel said during her 2022 People interview.
However, Deschanel isn’t just thankful for Scott’s role in her children’s lives during the holidays. In 2022, she took to Instagram with a sweet post about her blended family. “So thankful my kids have these two awesome guys in their lives,” Deschanel wrote, tagging Scott and Pechenik. The post features a photo of both men, each holding a child on their shoulders.
