HGTV favorites Chip and Joanna Gaines are about to launch another hit renovation series, “Fixer Upper: Colorado Mountain House.” But how did the couple end up tackling their first project outside of Waco, Texas?
Joanna Gaines Reveals How ‘Colorado Mountain House’ Was Born
Hours ahead of the premiere, Joanna opened up about the dream behind owning a mountain home in Colorado for her family.
“Over the last decade, Colorado has become a home away from home for our family,” she shared via Instagram on Tuesday, December 9. “Between yearly ski trips and spring break getaways, we fell in love with the mountains, the rivers, and the abundance of fresh air.”
The Magnolia owner continued, “As [Chip] is known to do, he started looking at real estate—casually—until he stumbled upon this house nestled in the Rocky Mountains.”
The pair reportedly knew right away that this stunning abode was the perfect fit for their family of seven.
“From the moment we pulled into the long driveway, it immediately felt like we’d found far more than what we’d been looking for. It had good bones, the right square footage, but mostly, it felt like a home away from home,” she continued. “While we knew that saying ‘yes’ to a major renovation project outside of Texas (our first!) would require being stretched beyond our comfort zone, we had a feeling taking on this fixer upper would be worth it in the end.”
Chip and Joanna’s Daughter Set to Make ‘Fixer Upper’ Debut
The couple revealed that their eldest daughter, Ella Gaines, will be following in her mother’s footsteps in the new series as she tackles designing a small cottage.
In a trailer for the show, Joanna noted, “Chip had an idea to let our daughter design the little cottage.”
The mother of five previously revealed that her daughter—who is a student at New York City’s Parsons School of Design—had a passion for design.
“ELLA’S TURN: Over the past few years, Ella has really come into her own when it comes to developing her own personal style,” Joanna wrote in a November 2025 Magnolia blog post.
She continued, “I love her eye, so I asked her to design the small cottage adjacent to the main house. It was so sweet to share this experience with her before she went off to college.”
“Fixer Upper: Colorado Mountain House” premieres Tuesday, December 9, at 9 p.m. ET on HGTV. Streaming fans can catch the episode next day on HBO Max and Discovery+.
