Whoopi Goldberg is celebrating a meaningful family milestone after sharing on the Dec. 8 episode of “The View” that she has become a great-grandmother for the second time. Goldberg revealed that her grandson, Mason Dean, welcomed a baby girl over the weekend, introducing newborn Lotus Dean to viewers with photos shown on-air. Goldberg said Lotus weighed 6 pounds, 3 ounces and appeared next to the family dog, Ruby, in one of the images.

Goldberg, 70, told the audience that the moment felt unexpectedly emotional, explaining that she never envisioned herself witnessing this many generations of her family grow. Her co-hosts congratulated her, with Sunny Hostin pointing out how in love Mason looked while holding his daughter. Goldberg responded with a light joke before adding that the milestone is “a wonderful thing,” per E! News.

The proud father also shared the moment publicly. Mason posted a carousel of photos on Instagram holding his daughter, revealing her full name, Lotus Marley Dean, and writing that she arrived on Dec. 5. Mason’s girlfriend, Hylee Whitley, also posted Polaroids from the hospital, including the first moments of Lotus resting in her arms. She called the newborn their “sweet angel” in her caption.

A New Generation Joins the Family

Goldberg’s daughter, Alex Martin, was also celebrated on-air, with Ana Navarro congratulating her on becoming a grandmother again. Goldberg noted that she tends to focus on her own experience during these big moments, sharing that she never expected to have two great-grandchildren at this stage of her life. Goldberg shares Alex, 51, with her first husband, Alvin Martin.

This marks the second time Goldberg has stepped into the great-grandmother role. Her eldest granddaughter, Amara Skye, welcomed her daughter, Charli Rose, in 2014. According to People, Goldberg has often said she was not a “normal grandmother” and did not expect to fit the traditional mold of a great-grandmother either. She previously revealed that Charli had difficulty pronouncing “Whoopi” and called her “Oopi” instead.

Goldberg shared that her great-grandchildren now simply call her Whoopi, emphasizing that she prefers being addressed by her name rather than adopting a classic family nickname. She added that Lotus already appears “very alert,” which she said reminded her of the spirited nature of the younger generation in her family.

Goldberg previously spoke about becoming a grandmother at a young age during a 2014 appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” noting that she transitioned into the role earlier than most. She also recalled teasing her daughter when Alex expressed nerves about becoming a grandmother, telling her she had “no sympathy” since she made Goldberg a grandmother at 33, according to Daily Mail.

During Monday’s episode, Goldberg’s co-hosts Alyssa Farah Griffin and Sara Haines joined in the celebration as more photos of baby Lotus appeared on screen. Goldberg reflected on the joy of witnessing another generation join the family and said she is grateful to experience it.

“This is my second,” Goldberg said on-air. “It’s a wonderful thing.”

Katie Couric is opening up about a meaningful moment from her past and reminding followers to hold their loved ones close. On Dec. 5, the journalist shared a throwback photo on Instagram from her 1989 wedding to her late husband, Jay Monahan. In her caption, Couric wrote that the picture resurfaced on her phone unexpectedly and immediately transported her back to their wedding day. She reflected on how neither she nor Monahan could have imagined he would be diagnosed with metastatic colon cancer eight years later.

“It made me think that we never really know what lies ahead and it was a reminder to appreciate every day and cherish those you love,” Couric wrote. She also shared that her husband, John Molner, responded warmly to the photo, adding, “He never feels threatened by Jay’s memory and understands a heart has space for two people.” Couric closed her message with a simple reminder: “Tell the people who matter to you that you love them… I approve this message.”

Support quickly poured in from followers and friends. According to comments on her post, Amanda Kloots wrote, “Always need that reminder and I also approve this message,” while Sheryl Crow added, “Beautiful pic and beautiful message, Katie ❤️.”

Couric Reflects on Her First Marriage and Honoring Monahan’s Memory

Couric has remained open about the impact Monahan’s passing had on her life. According to People, Monahan passed away in 1998 at age 42, leaving Couric to raise their daughters, Ellie and Caroline. She previously shared that the loss reshaped her understanding of life’s fragility and motivated her long-standing commitment to cancer awareness.

Couric often honors Monahan on significant anniversaries. In June, she posted another tribute on what would have been their 36th wedding anniversary, writing that although their time together was cut short, “our love endures, especially in our remarkable daughters.” She added that she misses him “every day, but especially on the important milestones where his absence feels so acute.”

The journalist has spoken candidly about their final months together, sharing in past interviews that she struggled with acknowledging the severity of his illness because she wanted to preserve hope. Despite the heartbreak, she has continued to honor Monahan’s memory through advocacy, awareness and storytelling.

Years after losing Monahan, Couric found love again with Molner, whom she married in 2014. The pair celebrated their 11th wedding anniversary earlier this year. Per People, Couric praised Molner for being her “port in the storm” and for always respecting the space Monahan still holds in her heart.

Couric has also remained one of the most visible advocates for cancer screening and early detection. She became a national voice for colon cancer awareness after losing Monahan, later experiencing additional loss when her sister passed away from pancreatic cancer. Couric publicly revealed her own breast cancer diagnosis in 2022 and continues to use her platform to encourage regular screenings.

Couric ended her recent Instagram message with a reminder that resonated deeply with her followers: “Be grateful today… appreciate every day and cherish those you love.”

ABC’s “The View” remains one of the most talked-about shows in daytime television, thanks to the unique perspectives each host brings to the table. As such, many fans have wondered why beloved cohost Alyssa Farah Griffin has been absent in recent days. She’s now opening up about why.

So far, Griffin has been absent from “The View” since December 1. She took to her Instagram Story on December 3 to explain. The host said, “Hey, guys! I’ve been down sick with a stomach virus, but will hopefully be back on The View tomorrow.”

She then said, “It’s no fun being sick with 6 1/2 + months pregnant! Remember it’s that time of year- be smart, use hand sanitizer, stay home if you’re sick.”

Notably, Griffin’s statement comes one day after her fellow “View” cohost Whoopi Goldberg sent her well-wishes on the show.

‘The View’ Alyssa Farah Griffin Announced Her Sweet News In October

Griffin has been offering her opinions on “The View” since 2022. However, she made headlines in October with her sweet pregnancy announcement. She and her husband, Justin Griffin, are expecting a boy, due in February 2026. This is the couple’s first child.

The “View” cohost told PEOPLE, “Baby Griffin is on the way, and we’re just so excited — and terrified. It’s starting to feel very real. This past week, I felt the baby kick for the first time, and immediately I grabbed Justin’s hand and he felt and I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, what’s happening?!’ It was magical.”

He then said of becoming a father, “The time is flying by, it’s crazy. I’ve always wanted to be a father, and you feel so present when you get the news. Like, ‘This is happening!’ But then all of a sudden you zoom out, and you’re like, ‘Wait, we’re 22 weeks pregnant? Where did it go? — slow down!'”

While trying to conceive, Griffin learned that she had endometriosis, a condition that, among other complications, makes this deeply personal goal more challenging to achieve.

She told the outlet, “I went undiagnosed my whole life until I started this process. So that just added to the complications.”

The Show Is Still Going Strong

“The View,” which legendary journalist Barbara Walters created, premiered on ABC in August 1997. Now, over 28 years later, the show still achieves impressive ratings and is watched by a new generation of viewers.

According to Variety, 2025 brought “The View’s” highest-rated season premiere in five years. The episode, which aired on September 8, averaged 2.602 million viewers. The show’s premiere was up seven percent in viewership from the previous year.

Overall, “The View’s” premiere week averaged 2.324 million viewers, which is pretty impressive given how much the daytime television landscape has changed.

Fans of “The View” are wondering why Joy Behar has been missing as they are used to seeing her smiling face alongside costars Whoopi Goldberg, Sunny Hostin, Sara Haines, Ana Navarro, and Alyssa Farah Griffin.

However, Behar has been absent from the morning show for the last three days.

Why Joy Behar Missed the View

While Behar’s normal day off is typically Monday, she was also absent for the Tuesday, November 11, and Wednesday, November 12, taping of the talk show.

Cohost Goldberg addressed Behar’s absence during the Wednesday episode, telling the audience that Behar sustained an injury.

“Well, hello, hello, hello, and welcome to The View, y’all,” Goldberg said at the top of the show, according to Entertainment Weekly. “Now, Joy is out because she hurt her foot, and hopefully she’ll be back here tomorrow.”

While her cohosts were anticipating her return during the Wednesday episode, as Goldberg remarked on Tuesday, they are now hoping for a quick recovery and for Behar’s return on Thursday, November 13.

Earlier this summer, Goldberg addressed another of Behar’s mysterious absences.

“So Joy is out today, possibly be back tomorrow. But who can say? Who can say?” she said during the July 15 episode, remaining vague on the reason Behar was missing, according to TV Insider. “If she’s not, she’ll be back the day after, because she’ll be back.”

Joy Behar Is a Fixture on ‘The View’

The comedian, 83, has been a fixture on The View for nearly three decades. She’s the longest-running cohost of the series, having joined during it’s premiere season in 1997.

At the time, Behar sat around the table with Meredith Vieira, Star Jones, Debbie Matenopoulos, and Barbara Walters.

Having only missed two seasons out of the 29 (so far), it’s rare to catch an episode of the daytime talk show without Behar.

She recently opened up about the possibility of retiring.

“Creative people don’t really retire,” she said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight on September 9.

“When Phyllis Diller, who’s one of my idols, when she was in her 80s and later, she said to me, ‘I tried writing. It didn’t work. So, I started painting,'” Behar shared, explaining how she loves to “write and create stuff” but hasn’t “had time to paint.” “And when I went to visit her, she had her paintings all over the house with price tags on them. So, creative people don’t retire. They don’t resign. They just keep going.”

Country superstar Kenny Chesney explained why he didn’t feel he deserved his spot in the Country Music Hall of Fame during a recent appearance on “The View.”

Kenny Chesney Said It Was ‘Hard’ to Accept the Honor

“I didn’t see it coming, for sure. They told me almost eight months before the induction,” Chesney, 57, told the cohosts of “The View” during a Wednesday, November 5, appearance on the daytime talk show. “It was really hard, in a way, for me to accept it, because I never saw myself in that spot.”

The “When the Sun Goes Down” artist was part of the class of 2025 alongside legends Tony Brown and June Carter Cash.

“Taking the group shot with a lot of my heroes and a lot of my friends,” Chesney said during the October 19 ceremony. “It was the first time that I have ever felt accomplished in my life. And I just want to thank you, God, for that. … With every cell in my body, I feel the gravity of this moment.”

He echoed the same sentiment during his appearance on “The View.”

“When I look at the people that are in [the Hall of Fame], I just don’t see myself as that,” he explained. “But, I will tell you, when I walked into that rotunda and saw plaques of all of my friends and heroes up there…It hit me. That’s when I really felt–cause I never set an accomplishment too much, I never let myself do that–but sitting in that group picture, I felt awfully accomplished for the first time maybe in my life.”

Kenny Chesney Reveals His Childhood Dream in New Book

Chesney has had a big year so far. In addition to being inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, he also released a memoir titled “Heart Life Music.”

The “There Goes My Life” penned the story of growing up in a small town in East Tennessee, dreaming of finding out if the roads he took to “school, church or mainly to the ballpark, went any further.”

“If anybody cracks open this book, especially if they’re a kid, and they’ve got a dream in their head,” he continued during his “The View” appearance. “Whether it’s music, sports, corporate America, to be on ‘The View,’ whatever it is…We wrote a book where it’s a touch of a roadmap to what I did.”

Throughout his decades-long career, Chesney has sold out numerous stadium shows, earned six Grammy nominations, won Entertainer of the Year at the Country Music Association Awards and Academy of Country Music Awards four times each, and sold millions of albums worldwide.

Steve Martin is showing off his musical skills as he revealed he teamed up with Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler for a surprising new collaboration.

The “Only Murders in the Building” actor opened up about the “weird” collaboration during a Thursday, October 30, episode of “The View.”

Steve Martin Reveals Collab With Steven Tyler

“That was weird,” Martin, 80, told the cohosts about how his collab with Tyler, 77, came about. “I got a call from my agent that said, ‘Steven Tyler is trying to reach you.'”

According to Martin, Tyler texted him wanting him to play the banjo on an acoustic re-release of his old song “My Only Angel,” which also features English singer YUNGBLUD.

The text exchange in question was previously shared by Martin via Instagram on October 23.

“Steve…have you had a chance to…” the rocker texted Martin, adding an ear emoji in place of the word “listen.”

“I have not gotten the song! I wrote you but didn’t hear back,” Martin responded. “Oh, I think I mistyped a number. Can you send it now?”

“We did the same thing…sending again…right now… ST,” Tyler wrote.

They continued to joke back and forth until Tyler later sent a thank you message.

“Steve… thank you soooo much for playing along with the song… we laid it in and WA LA… you made the acoustic version of the song so, so much better,” he wrote. “Now that’s something to talk about on Kimmel… so love your spirit… yess hahhhh!”

Jimmy Kimmel jokingly responded to the Instagram post, “Steves text about me.”

Steve Martin Recorded His Part on His Phone

During his appearance on “The View,” the “Father of the Bride” star explained that he self-recorded his part in the Aerosmith song.

“I recorded some music and said, ‘Is this what you’re looking for?'” he recalled. “I recorded it on my iPhone, and I sent it to him. And he said, ‘OK, we got it!'”

Martin confirmed with Tyler that he didn’t “have to go into a studio” to record.

“They’ve got miracles that make it sound fantastic,” he said.

Martin is best known for his acting achievements, including 17 Emmy nominations, an honorary Academy Award, and two Tony nominations. However, the comedian has also won three Grammy Awards, including Best Bluegrass Album for “The Crow: New Songs for the 5-String Banjo” and Best American Roots Song for “Love Has Come for You.” He first picked up the banjo at 17 and has played with artists including Earl Scruggs, Dolly Parton, Kelly Clarkson, Edie Brickell and The Steep Canyon Rangers.

The stars of 'The View' have gone all out for Halloween in years past, but viewers won't be seeing over-the-top Halloween costumes this year.

The stars of “The View” have gone all out for Halloween in years past, but viewers won’t be seeing over-the-top Halloween costumes from Whoopi Goldberg, Sara Haines, Joy Behar, Ana Navarro, Sunny Hostin, or Alyssa Farah Griffin this year.

‘The View’ Cohosts Won’t Be Dressing Up for Halloween

Brian Teta, longtime executive producer of the daytime talk show, shared the news on the Monday, October 27, episode of the “Behind The Table” podcast.

“This is going to be hard for people to hear, but no costumes for the hosts this year on Halloween,” Teta told Alyssa Farah Griffin. “Just prepare. I’m breaking the seal right now. We are gonna have fun stuff for Halloween, like we did last year. We’ll have ‘Hot Topics,’ we’ll have kids costumes, which everyone loves.”

Teta and Griffin also teased “a little surprise at the top” of the show.

“I know, I was bummed. But to be honest, with how heavy some of the topics are, you don’t want to be, like, dressed as a grape and talking about what’s happening in our news cycle,” Griffin explained.

According to Teta, in past years, when the cohosts were dressed for the holiday, they typically skipped the Hot Topics segment of the show.

“Last year, people complained a lot, but a lot of people watched. So hopefully, we’ll keep it going that way,” he added.

Cohosts Didn’t Dress Up for Halloween 2024

2024 marked the a rare change in which the cohosts opted out of themed on-air costumes for Halloween as the holiday landed just days before the presidential election.

“I’m going to announce something today that’s going to upset a portion of the audience, but I think it’s going to make you happy,” Teta announced with Joy Behar on the same podcast last October. “This year, because it’s only a few days before the election and we need to be live, the hosts are not going to dress up for Halloween.”

“It’s too important,” Behar said of the days leading up to the election.

While Teta vowed to “try to bring it back next year,” that plan will not be executed.

“The problem is, those shows are a huge undertaking, we have to do them on tape. Part of what our show has become and what it is right now, we can’t be on tape three days before the election,” he added

In years past, the cohosts have gone all out for their holiday attire, including Sherri Shepherd as a penny, Meghan McCain as Elsa from “Frozen”, Barbara Walters as Marilyn Monroe, and Whoopi Goldberg as Barbie from “Toy Story.”

Cindy McCain, widow of late U.S. Senator John McCain and executive director of the United Nations World Food Programme, suffered a mild stroke while visiting the organization’s headquarters in Rome, Italy, earlier this week.

The 71-year-old humanitarian received immediate medical attention and was cleared to travel back to Arizona, where she is expected to continue her recovery for up to six weeks.

The organization issued a statement on October 9.

In a statement, McCain expressed gratitude for the care she received.

“I want to thank the medical staff in Italy for the excellent treatment I received,” said McCain. “My recovery is progressing well thanks to their outstanding care. I look forward to continuing my recuperation at home in Arizona with my family,” she began.

McCain Talks Importance of the Organization

Despite her health scare, she emphasized the importance of the World Food Programme’s mission.

“In the meantime, I have full confidence in my leadership team to stay laser-focused on delivering urgently needed food assistance to the more than 100 million people WFP is working to serve across 87 countries,” she continued. “The fight against hunger has never been more critical, and I am incredibly proud of the work our teams do every day.”

McCain expressed how she is looking forward to returning when she is well again.

She has been serving as the executive director since May 2023.

“I look forward to being back in the field soon—alongside WFP teams—pushing back against famine and supporting communities in need.”

McCain’s daughter, Meghan McCain, a former co-host of “The View,” has not publicly commented on her mother’s condition.

However, the McCain family has requested privacy during this time.

Meghan McCain Discusses Her Mother’s Strength

After the passing of Sen. John McCain, Meghan shared a touching post where she highlighted her mom’s strength.

“I love you Mom @cindymccain – grateful for your love, strength, never ending support and always knowing how to perfectly wear black turtle necks and Chanel,” she wrote. “You’re the toughest and most resilient of us all. Thank you for selflessly guiding us through and being a bright light in so much dark.”

She shared an image of her late father with Cindy, as well as a cute image of herself with her mom.

In addtion to the post, Meghan has often shared her sadness after her John McCain’s passing.

“I still miss you every hour. Time feels slow, like being underwater – I try and fill the days distracting myself from how painful it all still is. I cannot believe how intense it all still feels – isn’t it supposed to start easing up by now,” she wrote in another Instagram post.

She added she always dreamed of having a boy first.

Whoopi Goldberg and numerous Hollywood actors are voicing their concerns after an AI-generated character named Tilly Norwood began attracting interest from talent agencies, sparking intense debate about the future of artificial intelligence in the entertainment industry.

The virtual creation is owned by AI talent studio Xicoia and developed by production company Particle6. The character made headlines when creator Eline Van der Velden made an announcement at the Zurich Summit. She revealed that multiple talent agents were considering representing the AI character. The news prompted swift reactions from established performers across the industry.

Goldberg Questions AI’s Impact on Acting

During a segment on “The View,” Goldberg challenged the notion that AI performers could truly replicate human actors. She also acknowledged the potential concerns associated with the technology. “After many human actors called for a boycott against agencies who sign AI actors, the studio claims Tilly is not a replacement for a human being, but a creative work, and AI characters should be judged as part of their own genre, rather than compared directly with human actors,” Goldberg stated, according to Entertainment Weekly.

The Emmy winner expressed concerns about the complex nature of AI creations. Goldberg explained her perspective on what she sees as an unfair competitive advantage. “The problem with this, in my humble opinion, is that you are suddenly up against something that’s been generated with 5,000 other actors. It’s got Bette Davis’ attitude, it’s got Humphrey Bogart’s lips… And so it’s a little bit of an unfair advantage,” she said.

Despite these concerns, Goldberg maintained confidence in the irreplaceable qualities of human performers. “But you know what? Bring it on. You can always tell them from us. We move differently, our faces move differently, our bodies move differently,” she declared.

She acknowledged that while current AI technology “isn’t seamless yet,” improvements could arrive within “two or three years.” Goldberg concluded by connecting the issue to broader societal concerns about technology replacing human connection across various industries.

Industry-Wide Pushback from Actors

Multiple high-profile actors took to social media to express their disapproval of the development. Melissa Barrera, star of “In the Heights,” posted a strong message on Instagram Stories. “Hope all actors repped by the agent that does this, drop their a$$. How gross, read the room.”

Mara Wilson, known for her role in “Matilda,” questioned the ethical implications of the AI’s creation method. She commented, “And what about the hundreds of living young women whose faces were composited together to make her? You couldn’t hire any of them?”

Nicholas Alexander Chavez, who portrayed Lyle Menendez in Netflix’s “Monsters” series, responded bluntly to the news. “Not an actress actually nice try.”

Other performers responded with humor while making their stance clear. Lukas Gage from “The White Lotus” joked: “She was a nightmare to work with!!!!” while Lucy Hale from “Pretty Little Liars” simply stated: “No.”

Van der Velden responded to the backlash by positioning Tilly Norwood as a creative project. She argued the AI character was not a threat to working actors. “To those who have expressed anger over the creation of my AI character, Tilly Norwood, she is not a replacement for a human being, but a creative work – a piece of art,” she stated in a response shared on social media.

The creator, who is herself an actor and comedian, drew comparisons to other technological advancements in entertainment. “I see AI not as a replacement for people, but as a new tool, a new paintbrush. Just as animation, puppetry, or CGI opened fresh possibilities without taking away from live acting, AI offers another way to imagine and build stories. I’m an actor myself, and nothing – certainly not an AI character – can take away the craft or joy of human performance,” she explained.

Van der Velden suggested that AI characters deserve their own category of evaluation. “AI characters should be judged as part of their own genre, on their own merits… Each form of art has its place, and each can be valued for what it uniquely brings,” she wrote.

The controversy arises against the backdrop of recent labor disputes in Hollywood. This includes the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, which partially addressed concerns about AI in the industry. The union representing 160,000 television and movie actors raised alarms about studios’ AI proposals. They expressed concerns about studios proposing to scan background performers for a single day’s pay. The studios would then retain perpetual rights to use those scans in future projects.
