After a slow start that some fans worried might signify a failure-to-launch for “Survivor 49,” the post-Merge portion of the season has reeled doubters back in, with many claiming that the most recent episode – which aired on Wednesday, November 26 – showcased one of the most entertaining Tribal Council ceremonies of the New Era as castaway Jawan Pitts was sent to the Jury following an “epic” blindside elimination.
Now, with just seven castaways remaining, all eyes are on the ever-encroaching season finale, and with it the Final Tribal Council ceremony, where the Final Three contestants will plead their case to the Jury as to why they, and not their opponents, deserves to win the title of “Sole Survivor” and the $1 million prize that comes with it.
With the three-hour finale episode set to air in less than three weeks on Wednesday, December 17, longtime “Survivor” host Jeff Probst is opening up about what’s still to come as Season 49 reaches its conclusion – and to look forward to what’s coming next, as the highly anticipated premiere date of “Survivor 50: In the Hands of the Fans” draws ever-closer.
Probst Teases Season 49’s ‘Explosive’ Back Half
“Once you get a little food in the belly and the inspiration of a possible spot on ‘Survivor 50’ starts to kick in, suddenly, that slow burn turns into a short fuse that’s been lit,” Probst told TVInsider, referring to his post-Merge reminder to the Season 49 contestants to play hard and make big moves as CBS was still in the process of casting the upcoming milestone season.
According to Probst, the Final Seven of “Survivor 49” have been putting in the work post-Merge to earn their invite to return.
“As their bodies start to recover and their minds sharpen, all that pent-up emotion and desperation starts to percolate, and what you end up with is a big, explosive back half of the season,” he teased. “There are still a lot of days and a lot of game left to be played! I think fans are going to enjoy it!”
CBSDespite Probst-approved performances from the entire cast, only three of the eight remaining castaways – Rizo Velovic, Savannah Louie, Sophi Balerdi, Sophie Segreti, Kristina Mills, Sage Ahrens-Nichols and Steven Ramm – will sit together at Final Tribal Council.
In the host’s words, the final days of the season will hinge upon “which player, or players, can seize the moment and go for broke…because to win ‘Survivor,’ you have to take a swing, knowing it could cost you everything. You have to risk your spot to earn your shot.”
A shot at the million dollar prize. But to win that, the season’s Final Three castaways will have to convince the Jury that it was them, and not their competitors, who was truly able to outwit, outplay and outlast on “Survivor.”
Probst Promises ‘Lively’ Final Tribe, Teases Season 50 Reveal
According to the host, fans can expect to see the Season 49 jury – currently including Nate Moore, MC Chukwujekwu, Alex Moore and Jawan Pitts – deliver a “very lively, interactive interrogation of the Final Three” during Final Tribal Council.
“One of the most enjoyable aspects of the new era is that the jury members come into the final Tribal Council very well prepared,” Probst expanded. “ They have a lot of agency in the outcome. They want a great winner to represent their season. That means the jury has to do the work and ask the right questions to get the answers they need to make their decision.”
CBSIn summation, Probst promised that the December 17 three-hour finale of “Survivor 49” will be “dramatic,” adding that the eventual winner “will have to earn it… by claiming it.”
During the December 17 finale, fans will not only find out who becomes the current-reigning “Sole Survivor,” but also the identities of the two Season 49 castaways who impressed Probst and CBS enough to be invited back to compete on “Survivor 50” this February.
While the duo returning to compete on back-to-back seasons will remain, at least officially, unconfirmed until then, fans can check out speculation and spoilers concerning their identities here.

Please do not bring anyone back from Survivor 49, except maybe the man who got bitten by a snake.
Savannah and Rizo are returning for Season 50. Their names were shown on a list from one of these recent emails, which appears to be a big oops! But I saw it with my own eyes.
