Will ‘Survivor 49’ See the End of the ‘Knowledge is Power’ Advantage?

Since the “Knowledge is Power” advantage, which allows its owner to steal another player’s advantage or Hidden Immunity Idol, was first introduced to “Survivor” audiences during Season 41, it has never been played successfully at Tribal Council

Now, as “Survivor 49” reaches its conclusion, castaway Sophi Balerdi may be the short-lived advantage’s final shot at redemption. With only one Tribal Councils left until the advantage loses its power, some fans are speculating that “Survivor” may retire the twist permanently if Balerdi is unable to pull off a game-changing blindside during next week’s semi-finals episode.

The Unsuccessful History of ‘Survivor’s ‘Knowledge is Power’ Advantage

During Season 41, which aired 2021 and officially launched the hit reality competition series’ “new era,” castaway Liana Wallace became the first-ever “Survivor” player to claim the “Knowledge is Power” advantage.

After securing the power during a Day 11 summit, Wallace expressed her intention to use it to steal her rival Xander Hastings’ Hidden Immunity Idol. Unfortunately for Liana, Xander caught wind of her plans ahead of Tribal Council and strategically handed it off to his ally Tiffany Seely for safekeeping before Liana could claim it as her own.

Since then, the advantage has remained notoriously difficult to play successfully, with subsequent seasons witnessing failure after failure from castaways like Drea Wheeler on Season 42, Geo Bustamante and James Jones on Season 43, and, most recently, Eva Erickson on Season 48.

While the Knowledge is Power twist remained absent for the majority of the new era – noticeably missing from Seasons 43 through 47 – Sophi Balerdi’s possession of the advantage on Season 49 could signal a kind of “book-ending” unless she’s able to capitalize on the power to successfully steal another player’s advantage or Hidden Immunity Idol ahead of the season finale, currently set to air on Wednesday, December 17.

Will Sophi Use the ‘Knowledge is Power’ Advantage to Flip on Her Allies?

“I think Sophi missed her chance to correctly play Knowledge is Power,” said “Survivor” superfan RealitySea on TikTok, arguing that Balerdi should’ve used the advantage to steal fellow castaway Kristina Mill’s Idol during November 26’s Final Eight Tribal Council ceremony.

RealitySea’s comments follow CBS’s release of a deleted scene from “Survivor 49” showing Balerdi searching through Mills’ bag and discovering her Hidden Immunity Idol during the most recent episode.

However, after Kristina’s idol was flushed during the same Tribal Council ceremony that saw castaway Savannah Louie use her extra vote advantage to successfully blindside Jawan Pitts, only one advantage remains in play for Sophi to successfully use her Knowledge is Power advantage.

“Her last resort is to steal Rizo [Velovic’s] idol, blindside him, and get him out,” RealitySea continued.

Despite the fact that every remaining player is aware of Rizo’s idol, the charismatic castaway has managed to hold on to its power for five consecutive Tribal Council ceremonies, working in tandem with Savannah and Sophi to pull off blindside after blindside that sent players like MC Chukwujekwu, Alex Moore, Jawan Pitts and, most recently, Sophie Segreti to the Jury

Now, Sophi may have to turn on her closest allies to successfully play her Knowledge is Power advantage and pull off the season’s biggest blindside yet.

While Balerdi has covertly admitted her interest in going after both Savannah and Rizo in an Episode 11 conversation with fellow castaway Sage Ahrens-Nichols, it remains unclear as to whether or not Balerdi will follow through with her plan, or if she’s merely manipulating Sage to secure herself and her allies seats next to one another at Final Tribal Council.

Or, Will the Short-Lived Advantage be put to Rest After Season 49?

Regardless, the season’s forthcoming 12th episode – set to air on Wednesday, December 10 – will mark Sophi’s final chances to prove the worth of the “Knowledge is Power” advantage, potentially securing its use in future seasons.

If not, RealitySea speculates that the advantage could be retired forever.

“I really think that if Sophi does not use this advantage correctly, it dies here and we will never see it again,” the superfan reported.

Find out what happens when “Survivor 49” returns to CBS this Wednesday, December 10 at 8:00pm ET, and be sure to catch the season’s “explosive” three-hour finale when it airs on December 17, when one castaway will be officially declared the next “Sole Survivor.”
