‘Star Trek’ Actor to Headline New Romance Movie

Chris Pine and Jenny Slate are joining forces in the upcoming indie romance “Carousel”, written and directed by Rachel Lambert, per Deadline. Details about the film’s plot remain under wraps, but it’s described as a love story featuring an ensemble cast that includes Abby Ryder Fortson, Sam Waterston, Katey Sagal, Heléne Yorke, Jessica Harper, and Jeffrey DeMunn. Filming wrapped in Cleveland, Ohio, where the production took over several local landmarks this summer.

According to reports, “Carousel” was filmed entirely in the state, using locations such as Medina’s Uptown Park, Jane’s Diner at Medina Square, and the Akron-Canton Airport. Residents even spotted Pine around town, with photos circulating of him visiting shops in Medina’s Public Square.

Bill Garvey, president of the Greater Cleveland Film Commission, called the film a win for the region’s growing film industry. “The production of the feature film ‘Carousel’ continues the pipeline of production investment and jobs to Northeast Ohio, spotlighting our region to an international audience,” he said.

Beyond “Carousel”, Pine has a full plate of upcoming projects. He’s set to star in and produce the Lionsgate action thriller “Run the Night”, directed by Robert Alonzo, marking the filmmaker’s feature debut, according to Variety.

Set in Amsterdam, the movie follows a banker accused of betraying the Dutch mob who wakes up with a $10 million bounty on his head and must fight across the city to save his family. Pine described the project as “full of possibilities” and praised his reunion with Alonzo, whom he worked with on “Star Trek” (2009).

The film is produced by Todd Lieberman and Alex Young for Hidden Pictures, with Pine producing alongside Ian Gotler under his Barry Linen Motion Pictures banner. Run the Night continues Pine’s streak of high-profile work, following his directorial debut Poolman and recent roles in “Don’t Worry Darling”, “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves”, and “Wish.”

Jenny Slate Expands Her Creative Reach with New Comedy Podcast

While “Carousel” adds another feature to Jenny Slate’s growing filmography, she’s also stepping into the podcasting world. Slate recently announced “I Need You Guys”, a new show co-hosted with comedians Max Silvestri and Gabe Liedman through SiriusXM and SmartLess Media.

Premiering Oct. 21, the podcast will feature the longtime friends catching up and chatting with guests including John Mulaney, Nick Kroll, Michelle Buteau, and Kumail Nanjiani. New episodes will drop every Tuesday across major platforms and the SiriusXM app.

Slate — who earned her first Emmy nomination for FX’s “Dying for Sex” — also has several upcoming projects, including “At the Sea” alongside Amy Adams and “Zootopia 2.”

With “Carousel”, both Pine and Slate are returning to their indie roots while balancing bigger ventures, marking a busy and creatively diverse year for both stars.
