Entrepreneur and investor Alexis Ohanian has built a business empire worth an estimated $150 million as of 2025. Best known as the co-founder of Reddit, Ohanian’s fortune stems from his groundbreaking startups, venture capital firm, and growing portfolio in sports and technology.
Ohanian will appear as a guest panelist on “Shark Tank” on October 22, marking another milestone in his already dynamic career. His resume includes launching Reddit in 2005 with Steve Huffman and Aaron Swartz, selling it to Condé Nast just a year later for a reported $10–20 million (according to CNBC).
Today, Reddit’s market cap exceeds $40 billion, solidifying his early contribution to the digital world.
From Reddit to Breadpig & Initialized Capital

After Reddit’s success, Ohanian continued to explore ventures that combined innovation with purpose. In 2007, he launched Breadpig, a publishing startup that donates its proceeds to charity. Three years later, he co-founded Initialized Capital, a venture capital firm that became a key player in funding early-stage startups.
Under Ohanian’s leadership, Initialized Capital helped launch several billion-dollar companies, including Instacart, Coinbase, and Opendoor. His knack for spotting potential in tech-driven ideas established him as one of Silicon Valley’s most respected investors.
Expanding into Sports & Philanthropy
Never one to stay in one lane, Ohanian diversified his portfolio into sports and philanthropy. In 2024, he helped launch Athlos, a women ‘s-only track and field competition focused on visibility and equality in sports.
As per ESPN, in the same year, he joined the board of directors for Chelsea Women’s Football Club after acquiring a 10% stake in the team.

How a Waffle House Inspired His Billion-Dollar Path
(Photo by Dia Dipasupil/Getty Images)Ohanian’s entrepreneurial journey began with a single bold decision. As a college student at the University of Virginia, he walked out of the mid-test of the LSAT and headed to a Waffle House, deciding on the spot to become an entrepreneur.
“So I’d walked out of the LSAT,” he recalled on Wired’s Uncanny Valley podcast. “I went to a Waffle House and decided I was just gonna invent a career and be an entrepreneur.”
That impulsive choice led him and his roommate, Steve Huffman, to pitch an idea at a Harvard lecture by investor Paul Graham. Their original concept was rejected, but Graham saw potential in the duo. “We still don’t like your idea, but we like you guys,” Graham told them. “If you’re willing to change your idea, we’ll fund you.”
That moment sparked Reddit, a platform that now attracts more than 110 million daily users. As Ohanian put it, “It all started with a Waffle House, and the rest is history.”
