The Surprising Color Kate Middleton Won’t Wear (and the One She Can’t Get Enough Of)

Kate Middleton’s influence on royal fashion is undeniable. Since her first official appearance at Garter Day in 2008, the Princess of Wales has evolved into one of the world’s most celebrated and emulated style icons.

Whether she’s attending a formal royal event or supporting one of her charities, her wardrobe always captures attention — blending regal polish with everyday accessibility.

But sharp-eyed royal watchers have noticed there’s one color she almost never wears. And while she’s known for experimenting with different shades, this missing hue reveals something fascinating about her fashion instincts.

The Color Kate Middleton Rarely Wears

Though Princess Kate has worn nearly every color under the sun — from sunny yellows to jewel-toned blues — she’s been steering clear of orange for quite some time. It’s not a royal rule; in fact, Queen Elizabeth II often wore the bright hue proudly. For Kate, experts believe it comes down to her natural coloring and keen understanding of what flatters her best.

HELLO! magazine spoke with color analyst Gabriella Winters of Chromology UK, who explained why orange may not appear often in Kate’s wardrobe. “I think the answer lies in DNA and Kate’s awareness of how certain colours [are] less flattering compared to other colours,” Winters said. “People absorb and reflect the same colours differently depending on their unique biological makeup. When a colour is placed adjacent to your face, it will reflect its wavelength onto you.”

In simpler terms, some shades can either enhance your complexion or compete with it. The warm, fiery undertones of orange may not bring out the same glow for Kate as deeper, cooler tones do.

The last time she wore the color was in January 2023, when she stepped out in a tangerine two-piece by Gabriela Hearst during a visit to Foxcubs Nursery in Luton. The coordinated set — a ribbed midi skirt and turtleneck — was chic as ever, but since then, orange has been noticeably absent from her royal wardrobe.

The Color the Princess of Wales Can’t Stop Wearing

If orange is the color Kate avoids, burgundy is clearly her favorite. The Princess of Wales has turned the rich hue into a style signature, wearing it for everything from royal receptions to international visits.

Color psychology expert Karen Haller, author of “The Little Book of Colour,” told the Daily Mail that the shade aligns perfectly with Kate’s composed personality and leadership style. “This rich shade reflects the balance Catherine achieves in knowing when to take centre stage and when to step back,” Haller said. “It carries an understated authority and natural poise, projecting confidence without being showy.”

Kate has repeatedly turned to burgundy for major moments — from greeting Donald and Melania Trump in a bespoke Emilia Wickstead coat to meeting the Emir of Qatar in an Alexander McQueen ensemble. She accessorized both with coordinated hats, gloves, and her signature Gianvito Rossi heels.
