Meghan Markle’s father, Thomas Markle, has undergone a below-the-knee amputation after a sudden medical emergency in the Philippines. As per a video by The Sun, the 81-year-old was rushed to a local hospital on Tuesday after falling ill at home, and doctors determined he needed urgent surgery when his foot rapidly turned blue and then black.

His son, Thomas Jr., confirmed the news to the Daily Mail. “There was no option. I was told the leg had to be removed, and it was a case of life or death,” he said. “My dad is being very brave. His foot turned blue and then black. It happened very quickly.”
Thomas Jr. said he initially took his father to a nearby hospital, where scans made clear how serious the situation was.
“I took him to a local hospital, and they did some scans and an ultrasound and said the leg had to be amputated,” he explained.
Family Shares Updates and Asks for Compassion
Thomas Jr. previously told the outlet that his father’s life “was in imminent danger.” He described the emergency transfer that followed: “They raced us by ambulance, with the sirens going, to a much bigger hospital in the center of the city. My dad has undergone emergency surgery.”
He asked the public to hold his father in their thoughts. “I would ask everyone around the world to keep him in their thoughts.” He also expressed hope that Meghan would show “some compassion,” adding, “He is literally fighting for his life.”
Thomas’s daughter, Samantha, echoed those fears. “He is a strong man, but he has been through so much,” she said. “I am praying that he is strong enough to survive this.”
Longstanding Health Issues
As per US Weekly, Thomas has faced several significant health struggles in recent years, including a stroke and previous heart attacks. He lived in Mexico for a decade before moving to the Philippines in January.
He has been estranged from Meghan since her 2018 wedding to Prince Harry. Thomas suffered two heart attacks just before the ceremony and was unable to walk her down the aisle. The then–Prince Charles stepped in.
Their relationship fractured further after Thomas posed for paparazzi photos ahead of the wedding. The fallout escalated during a tense phone call with Harry while Thomas was recovering in the hospital.
Concerns for Thomas’s Safety Amid Recent Earthquake Scare
As per the New York Post, just months earlier, Samantha raised concerns for their father’s safety after he became stuck on the 19th floor of his apartment in the Philippines following a deadly earthquake. Family members have expressed ongoing worry about his health and living conditions as he continues facing serious medical issues.
Thomas remains in intensive care as he recovers from surgery, with additional treatment expected in the coming days.
