Anthony and Joe Russo — also known collectively as the Russo Brothers — have posted a cryptic image and message from the set of their upcoming movie ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’
The black-and-white photograph, posted on the Russos’ official Instagram page, gives very little away, as it’s clearly from a scene that will require a lot of green screen and CGI.
There’s a plain background covered in lights, a large spotlight on a crane, a vertical structure made of scaffolding-like metal parts, other pieces of nondescript equipment laying around, and a lone man sitting in a chair shrouded in relative darkness.
Rather intriguingly, the image is captioned “Look hard…” — and that has, of course, prompted Marvel Cinematic Universe fans to do exactly that and come up with theories about what the image means.
Lots of ‘Avengers vs X-Men’ Theories
Although there were numerous theories about what the image meant, the prevailing one suggested that it had something to do with the Avengers facing off with the X-Men in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ — and that certainly seems plausible, given that both superhero teams will be appearing in the movie.
One user wrote, “The Avengers “A” on the left. The multiple X-Men “X’s” on the right. The dots on the left side of the crane form a “V” and the dots on the right side form a letter “S”. AVENGERS VS. X-MEN. In an additional movie? 🤩🔥”
Another commenter simply said, “A vs X ( Avengers vs X-men ) 🔥🔥🔥”
One guy went into more detail, writing, “Simplified : X and A while Dr.Doom is staring in his throne.
This will be likely the Ending of Avengers Doomsday to Avengers Secret Wars.. Maybe put it out to Post Credit Scenes (foreshadow)
(X) Men and (A)vengers likely colliding which is very likely Multiversal conflict due to incursions this is for sure foreshadowing to (Secret Wars) X-Men Vs Avengers.
And here Dr. Doom just staring at them fighting in a white and black effects as I sees it as ” COSMIC”
Might be “GOD EMPEROR DOOM” just staring at them while X AND A are fighting.” And that wasn’t even all of his comment!
Other users’ comments included, “A V X…Avengers vs X-Men,” “I see lots of A’s X’s and 4’s,” “A vs X,” “Avengers vs XMEN 🙌,” and “Avengers vs. X-Men.”
Meanwhile, another user jokingly commented, “Sue Storm, Drax and John Cena in one photo is crazy!” If you get it, you get it.
Other theories suggested that the person sitting in the chair was either Tobey Maguire, Hugh Jackman, Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., or one of the Russo Brothers themselves.
The ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Possibilities Are Endless
The likelihood of anyone having guessed correctly regarding what the Russos were hinting at is slim. That’s because the possibilities of what may happen in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ are, quite literally, endless.
The movie will bring together characters from all over the Marvel multiverse, meaning any number of characters from past movies and the comic books could appear.
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ will see Robert Downey Jr. returning to the MCU as the movie’s main antagonist, Doctor Doom. Downey Jr. has, of course, previously played Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, in 10 movies in the franchise, and his return is highly anticipated.
The all-powerful Doom will require a cohesive conglomerate of heroes to combat him, and that will include the Avengers and X-Men. Whether or not the two heroic teams will fight each other first remains to be seen.
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
