‘KPop Demon Hunters 2’ Aims for 2029 Release as Netflix & Sony Reunite

The global hit “KPop Demon Hunters” is officially getting a sequel. After months of speculation, Sony Pictures Animation and Netflix have finalized plans for “KPop Demon Hunters 2,” with a release window set for 2029, according to Deadline.

The original animated musical became a cultural sensation after its 2025 debut, introducing the fictional K-pop trio HUNTR/X — Rumi, Mira, and Zoey — who balance superstardom with secret lives as demon slayers. The film’s mix of glossy pop visuals, Korean folklore, and action storytelling turned it into one of the year’s most-watched streaming titles.

Sony and Netflix reached an agreement on key creative and distribution details for the sequel, though the studios have not yet announced the exact release date, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Sources told the outlet that both studios wanted to secure the return of directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans before moving forward. Industry sources expect the duo to begin development once they finalize preproduction schedules.

Exploring the Origins of HUNTR/X

According to Variety, the sequel will expand on the group’s backstories, focusing on how each character became part of the demon-hunting trio. Kang said in earlier interviews that the first film intentionally left parts of their origin untold, creating space for future storytelling. The follow-up is also expected to explore new supernatural lore while continuing the franchise’s musical foundation.

The first film’s soundtrack made history by placing four songs in the Billboard Hot 100’s top 10, led by the hit single “Golden.” Industry analysts told Deadline that similar musical ambitions are expected for the sequel, with new original songs already in early development.

Building a Global Franchise

For both studios, “KPop Demon Hunters 2” represents more than a follow-up. As The Hollywood Reporter noted, it signals a growing willingness among streamers and animation studios to invest in original intellectual property rather than established franchises.

The film’s hybrid rollout, streaming worldwide and in limited theatrical sing-along events, helped it reach audiences far beyond traditional animation fans. Its success also proved that global viewers are eager for stories blending Asian pop culture with Hollywood-scale production.

A Long Wait Ahead

With a four-year production timeline ahead, fans will have to wait before HUNTR/X takes the stage again. But if the first film’s record-breaking run is any indication, anticipation will only grow. For now, viewers can keep streaming the soundtrack and revisiting the original adventure while counting down to 2029, when the world’s fiercest pop idols return to fight demons once more.
