Sparks spilled to The L.A. Times how it all went down. Back in 2023, “someone on his team approached him with an idea. ‘Hey, wouldn’t it be neat if you did something with M. Night Shyamalan?’” And apparently, the universe had been nudging them together for decades. When “The Notebook” was being adapted way back in the late ’90s, producers actually asked Shyamalan to direct. He said no. Why? He was busy with… oh, just a tiny little movie called “The Sixth Sense.”

Fast forward a few years, and sparks (pun very much intended) flew. Sparks got a call to meet with Shyamalan, and things escalated fast. “It took only six weeks for Shyamalan to complete a first draft of the screenplay, which he sent to Sparks for comment,” according to The L.A. Times.
This time, the screenplay came first. “Typically, the book would be written first, and the screenplay would follow,” the outlet explains. But not here. Sparks’ reaction? “Oh my gosh. This is going to be an M. Night movie! I guess I’d better get started on the novel!”
The story? A grieving architect meets a mysterious woman on Cape Cod. Sparks’ emotional storytelling plus Shyamalan’s supernatural suspense = fans already losing it.
Jake Gyllenhaal and Phoebe Dynevor Are Starring
Jake Gyllenhaal and Phoebe Dynevor have already signed on to the film, Deadline confirms. The movie adaptation of “Remain” is due to be released October 23, 2026 (The L.A. Times).
Meanwhile, the novel drops this month, and the hardcover is already looking fire on Instagram. Sparks posted: “#REMAIN is almost here!
