Lucious Malfoy actor and “Harry Potter” star Tom Felton received a standing ovation amongst rapturous applause when he appeared on stage for a Broadway performance of “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.” Felton’s debut led to a pause in the performance as the cast waited for the audience to calm down before they could continue.
Tom Felton Receives Huge Applause On Stage Debut
Felton made his debut in “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” at a performance on Broadway in the Lyric Theatre in New York City. The appearance meant that Felton reprised his role from the “Harry Potter” film franchise for the first time since the release of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2” in 2011.
With the audience seemingly unaware that Felton would be appearing on stage, members of the crowd spontaneously broke out into rapturous applause when the actor stepped onto stage. The applause continued for more than 30 seconds, forcing the cast to pause the performance and Felton to stand in place until the noise died down.
The official Instagram account for the production shared footage of the moment online along with the caption, “It’s true then, what they’re saying on the train. Tom Felton has come to Broadway.” The actor is due to remain in the role of Malfoy until March 22, 2026.
The show sees Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Draco as adults 19 years after the events of the original novels and films and was created by J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne, and John Tiffany. The plot centers around the children of the main characters attending Hogwarts.
Felton had previously explained that playing Draco Malfoy once again felt like a full circle moment as the actor is the same age as the character he is portraying.
“Joining this production will be a full-circle moment for me, because when I begin performances in ‘Cursed Child’ this fall, I’ll also be the exact age Draco is in the play,” he said. “It’s surreal to be stepping back into his shoes – and of course his iconic platinum blond hair – and I am thrilled to be able to see his story through and to share it with the greatest fan community in the world.”
Harry Potter Returning For Television Adaptation
GettyNews broke earlier this year that HBO was adapting the “Harry Potter” novels as part of a television series. The cast includes relative unknowns portraying the wizarding children, including Dominic McLaughlin as the new Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley.
Joining them will be John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Janet McTeer as Professor Minerva McGonagall.
