‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Star’s Hiatus Confirmed — Find Out When She’ll Be Back

After being rocked by the events in the “Grey’s Anatomy” season 21 finale, one beloved doctor is taking a step back. Amelia Shepherd’s emotional storyline has led to a major change for the actress behind the character — and fans won’t see her at Grey Sloan for quite some time.

Dr. Amelia Shepherd Takes Extended Break From ‘Grey’s Anatomy’

Caterina Scorsone is stepping away from “Grey’s Anatomy” for an extended period. The actress, who plays Dr. Amelia Shepherd, will be absent for eight consecutive episodes during season 22 and is expected to return in 2026.

Thursday’s episode confirmed Amelia’s exit storyline. After struggling to cope with the deadly hospital explosion that rocked the season 21 finale — caused by her patient Dylan’s mother — she announced her decision to take a sabbatical. Despite interventions from Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) and Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary), Amelia admitted she wasn’t coping.

“I just need time,” she said during the episode, signaling her temporary departure from Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

Why the ABC Mainstay Is Reducing Screen Time for Main Cast Members

According to Entertainment Weekly, Scorsone’s extended hiatus ties into a larger shift within the “Grey’s Anatomy” cast structure. Starting in the 2024–25 season, the show reduced the minimum episode guarantees for its veteran cast members to 14 out of 18 episodes per season — a cost-saving approach similar to other long-running dramas.

While most returning stars will miss four episodes, Scorsone will sit out eight in a row, making her break the longest among the current main cast. The move was written directly into Amelia’s storyline, but sources emphasize that Scorsone remains a full series regular.

Showrunner Meg Marinis previously told Deadline that season 22 will explore the aftermath of Amelia’s professional choices. “She was very medical this season,” Marinis said. “We’ll see if her strive and desire to keep taking on medical cases continues after what happens to Dylan. That’s a moment of hubris for her. She took on something that maybe she shouldn’t have.”

Not the First Time ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Has Made Cuts

This isn’t the first time “Grey’s Anatomy” has scaled back appearances for major characters. Camilla Luddington, who plays Jo Wilson, revealed during season 21 that she was not featured in every episode.

“You won’t be seeing Jo in every episode this season,” Luddington told Variety at the time. “But what it kind of does is you see in the episodes that we are in, you’re getting a lot of story condensed into it.”

That same model appears to have continued into season 22 — with Scorsone’s absence being a notable exception. Amelia Shepherd, who has been a core part of the series since season 7 and first appeared in the spinoff “Private Practice,” remains a fan-favorite character. Viewers can expect her return in 2026.

New episodes of “Grey’s Anatomy” air Thursday nights on ABC and are available to stream the next day on Hulu.
