Eric Dane is about to be back on our screens, and yep, this one is going to hit differently. Why? Because the “Grey’s Anatomy” alum will be guest starring in an upcoming episode of NBC’s “Brilliant Minds.”
According to Variety he’s set to play Matthew, a firefighter figuring out how to tell his family about his ALS diagnosis in Season 2, Episode 9 of the series. But, this isn’t just any other role. It seems like Dane is bringing a part of his real-life story to the screen, and honestly? That’s bound to be pretty powerful.
Eric Dane: Opening Up About ALS
Earlier this year, Dane shared that he’s living with ALS, a.k.a Lou Gehrig’s disease (People). Let’s get serious for a minute. This is a neurodegenerative illness that slowly paralyzes the body by destroying the nerve cells controlling movement, notes The Mayo Clinic . Sadly for many, it takes away the ability to walk, speak, and eventually breathe on your own. Not exactly something anyone plans for.
Since going public, Dane’s been refreshingly open about life with ALS. And fans were deeply concerned when he skipped the “Grey’s Anatomy” reunion at the Emmys (it was later announced a fall left him hospitalized). But that doesn’t mean he’s giving up.
But here’s the part that really hits, Dane told People:
“ALS is the last thing they want to diagnose anybody with. So often, it takes all this time for these people to be diagnosed, well, then it precludes them from being a part of these clinical trials… I have two daughters at home. I want to see them, you know, graduate college, and get married and maybe have grandkids. You know, I want to be there for all that. So I’m going to fight to the last breath on this one.”
Yep, we see you, Eric. For anyone who grew up watching him, it seems like this is giving fans a whole new level to admire him on. Cue the vulnerability and bravery all at once.
Taking on a Guest Role With Heart
Per NBC, “Brilliant Minds,” stars Zachary Quinto as neurologist Oliver Wolf. It follows a team of doctors tackling medical mysteries of the mind. Dane’s character Matthew is a firefighter trying to juggle being a hero with the fear of burdening his family with devastating news (Variety). Yep, it’s heartbreaking, it’s raw, and it’s exactly the kind of storyline that makes you stop and think.
“oh so they want me SOBBING,” said one fan on X (formerly Twitter) after seeing the news. But that is what makes this such an intriguing role. By taking this guest spot, Dane isn’t just acting; he’s giving ALS a human face. His performance could help viewers understand what living with the disease is really like while also showing that strength comes in many forms.
From “Grey’s Anatomy,” to his intense role on “Euphoria,” to Amazon’s “Countdown” (which was recently canceled; via Deadline), Dane keeps proving he’s not just a talented actor, he’s so much more.

“Brilliant Minds” airs Mondays at 10pm ET on NBC, streaming next day on Peacock.

I was diagnosed with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in 2024 at 61. I felt like my life had been placed on a countdown. The weakness, slurred speech, and muscle loss progressed quickly. Rilutek (riluzole) and other medications given by my doctors did very little to help me. The medical team did even less. My decline was rapid and devastating. My arms weakened first, then my hands and legs. I was wheelchair-bound. My feet hurt horribly on the foot pedals. Around January of this year, a family friend told us about the LIMITLESS HERBS CENTER and their successful ALS/MND herbal treatment. We visited their website and ordered their ALS/MND Formula, and I am excited to report Within two months, I noticed more strength in my limbs, clearer speech, and a feeling of stability I didn’t have in months. Most of the symptoms stopped, and I’m able to walk and ride my treadmill again. I feel very fortunate to have learned about the ALS/MND formula.
