“Grey’s Anatomy” star James Pickens Jr. revealed he has been battling cancer.
Beloved for his decades-long role as Dr. Richard Webber, he has opened up about his real-life battle with prostate cancer — and he’s using his platform to champion the power of early screening.
The 71-year-old actor recently shared his story with Black Health Matters, emphasizing that he is living proof that early detection can save lives.
Pickens disclosed that prostate cancer runs in his family, and he’s been vigilant about his health for years.
He has been a staple on the show, appearing in all 22 seasons of the popular series.
Cancer Runs in His Family
The actor said the news of his diagnosis didn’t surprise him.
“It’s not the kind of news anyone wants to hear, but to be honest, prostate cancer has run through my family,” he added. “My father had it. He had a lot of brothers; several of them had it. I would have been surprised if I hadn’t gotten it.”
He revealed that he’s had annual physicals for more than three decades, starting PSA (prostate-specific antigen) testing when he was 41.
Earlier this year, elevated PSA levels prompted further tests. An MRI and biopsy led to the discovery of a tumor — thankfully, scans confirmed it hadn’t spread.
He underwent a prostatectomy, a minimally invasive surgery that removes the prostate, and was in the hospital for just one day.
Detection Is Key
Pickens noted that his cancer was a rare variant, but because it was caught early, doctors opted for a cautious but proactive plan.
“My urologist said, ‘Because you were so diligent in that piece of your health, it was to your advantage. We were able to catch it so early because you were being tested,’” Pickens shared.
Beyond sharing his personal experience, Pickens is also on a mission.
He partnered with Black Health Matters to create a PSA, encouraging Black men — who statistically face higher risks — to begin prostate screening around age 40.
He said, “Today, I am living proof that early detection works.”
Fans were quick to praise the star.
“Love him❤️ I cried during the end😭 This message is so important,” one user wrote.
Another added, “Such an important message – we must take care of our health & loved ones!”
The timing of his revelation is especially poignant. On “Grey’s Anatomy,” his character was recently diagnosed with cancer during the season 22 midseason finale.
The line between fiction and reality is clear — and Pickens is turning that overlap into a way to save lives.
