Jamie-Lynn Sigler, an actress known for her role in “The Sopranos” and “Big Sky” is returning to television after a three-year acting break. Sigler will be guest-starring on ABC’s hit series “Grey’s Anatomy” in season 22 as a doctor who has Multiple Sclerosis (MS) amid her own battle with the disease.

According to Deadline, Sigler will appear in the January 15 episode titled “Heavy on Me,” as Dr. Laura Kaplan, a urologist living with MS, who visits Grey Sloan at the request of Catherine Fox (Debbie Allen) and offers Richard (James Pickens Jr.) a unique perspective on his case.

The role was created for Sigler, who has lived with MS for over two decades. Despite this, it was important to the show’s producers and to Sigler that Kaplan is not defined by this affliction.

How Sigler’s Illness Has Made Her Even Stronger

Honoree Jamie-Lynn Sigler speaks onstage during the 24th Annual Race To Erase MS Gala at The Beverly Hilton Hotel on May 5, 2017 in Beverly Hills, California.

Sigler has multiple sclerosis, a disease in which the immune system attacks the central nervous system, which includes the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves, according to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. She has relapsing multiple sclerosis, or RMS, which means that at certain times, during flare-ups, her symptoms are especially exacerbated.

Sigler was diagnosed with MS about 22 years ago, when she was 20 years old, but she wouldn’t publicly reveal her diagnosis for 15 years. Keeping quiet about what she was going through “took the joy out of (her) job.”

Luckily, Sigler’s joy for acting has returned now that she’s an advocate and is candid about life with RMS. “It has taken some thought and care and really allowed me to find my voice to be quite honest,” she told TODAY.

She has also learned how to set boundaries and advocate for herself in a way she might not have if it weren’t for her illness. “The adjustments that I make, whether that’s on set and asking for a chair to rest in between takes or scenes or parking my trailer a little closer to set,” she says make all the difference.

“It was a big moment for me, because it was the beginning of this journey of self-reflection and self-acceptance,” Sigler told PEOPLE in November 2023. “I grew up with this idea that people are only going to be attracted to you when you’re perfect, and it’s quite the opposite. MS gave me my superpower, which is vulnerability, because the more raw and real and open I am — and this has forced me to be that — the more beautiful connections are.”

Sigler’s Personal Life Outside of Acting Remains Full

Sigler has two sons, Beau Dykstra, born in 2013, and Jack Dykstra, born in 2018, with her husband, baseball player Cutter Dykstra.

While the actress has difficulty walking for long periods of time, “I can still accomplish the things that I want to do, whether it be at work or at home,” she continued to PEOPLE in 2023.

With two young boys, Sigler had to adjust to long days of after-school activities and sports as well. “It’s a lot of gear, it’s long walks. It’s hot in Texas,” she said. “We got a big wagon that I can push, that I can lean on and throw all of the stuff in. It’s figuring it out with my husband and my support system: How do we do this?”

“I don’t know if there’s enough ways that I can describe my gratitude for him,” Sigler said of Dykstra. “He’s made himself available to me in every way that I’ve needed support.”

Eric Dane is ready to share his story in a deeply personal way. The “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Euphoria” star has announced his upcoming memoir, “Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments,” which will be published by Maria Shriver’s Penguin Random House imprint, The Open Field. The book is set to arrive in 2026 and will highlight the most meaningful days of his life, from early career milestones to family moments and his experience living with ALS.

According to The Open Field, the memoir is a collection of defining moments Dane has carried with him over the years, including the births of his daughters, his first day on “Grey’s Anatomy,” his decision to get sober and the day he learned he had amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. In a statement shared through the imprint and reported by People, Dane said the book is his way of capturing the days that shaped him. “I wake up every morning, and I’m immediately reminded that this is real — this illness, this challenge,” he said. He added that he hopes readers will “remember what it means to live with heart.”

Shriver called the actor’s story “courageous” and said she is honored to publish it, noting that the memoir will help readers better understand what ALS is and how to support those facing neurological conditions, per ABC News.

Dane Reflects on His ALS Diagnosis and Why He Chose to Write Now

Dane announced his ALS diagnosis in April and has been open about the challenges that come with it. ALS is a progressive neurological disease that affects movement, speech and breathing. Most patients live three to five years after diagnosis. Despite the reality of the illness, Dane has been clear that he refuses to let it silence his purpose.

During a recent virtual panel with NBC’s “Brilliant Minds” and advocacy group I AM ALS, Dane shared that, even on difficult days, he remains determined to keep working. “I’m not about to concede my purpose for some disease,” he said, per the Daily Mail. He added that he still has his mind, his speech and a desire to tell stories, which keeps him grounded in his work.

His guest role on “Brilliant Minds” became a powerful extension of this. Dane portrayed a firefighter with ALS — a storyline that closely mirrored his real life. He admitted the process was emotionally challenging but also cathartic, explaining that some scenes were hard to get through because the material hit so close to home.

Looking Ahead as Dane Continues Acting and Shares His Story

Even as his physical abilities change, Dane said he intends to continue acting in roles that make sense for where he is now. He acknowledged that future characters may need to address his condition, but emphasized that he is grateful to keep working in any capacity. “I’ll take on any role,” he said during the panel, adding that he is “willing to do just about anything” on screen.

For Dane, the memoir is an extension of that commitment: documenting the moments that shaped him, honoring the days that still give him purpose and creating something lasting for his family and his fans. As he put it in his statement, “If sharing this helps someone find meaning in their own days, then my story is worth telling.”

“Grey’s Anatomy” fans have not gotten an update from Dr. Addison Montgomery in years. That’s about to change as Kate Walsh is set to return for a guest role in season 22.

Kate Walsh Returns to ‘Grey’s Anatomy’

News broke of Walsh’s return on Thursday, December 4, as the official Shondaland Instagram page shared the exciting news.

“We’re excited to announce the return of Dr. Addison Montgomery to Grey Sloan! 🩺🏥 #GreysAnatomy” the announcement read.

Longtime “Grey’s” viewers will remember Dr. Addison Montgomery’s ceremonious entrance into the Seattle Grace world during the season 1 finale when she introduced herself as Dr. Derek Shepard’s wife, leaving fans on a cliffhanger.

She became a staple in the cast throughout the next two seasons before her departure at the end of season 3. Dr. Montgomery was given a spinoff series, “Private Practice”—which took place in Los Angeles—though she continued to make appearances at Seattle Grace over the next five seasons.

Walsh later returned in a recurring role in Seasons 18 and 19.

Fans React to Kate Walsh’s ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Return

“Grey’s Anatomy” fans shared their excitement and theories regarding Walsh’s return in the comments section of the Shondaland Instagram post.

“I hope we get more Addison and Teddy [Altman]… cause they have the same vibe as doctors! I wanna see them working together!” one fan wrote.

“I love this!!! If only Cristina would return! My life would be made!” a second chimed in.

“Knew it! Can she being Jake too, we didn’t have nearly enough Jaddison <33” another added.

“Knew she was coming to save Jo,” one fan wrote, while another agreed, “Come save Jo Wilson and her babies.”

Fans were left with yet another cliffhanger during the season 22 fall finale as Dr. Jo Wilson was diagnosed with a heart condition while pregnant with twins.

The episode, titled “When I Crash,” saw Dr. Wilson (played by Camilla Luddington) being rushed to surgery to install a pump in her heart to correct the issue. However, Dr. Ndugu was forced to perform an emergency C-section mid-procedure—a procedure he had not performed since medical school—in order to save Wilson’s unborn babies.

“Best news of the year!!!!!” another fan wrote.

When Is Kate Walsh Returning to ‘Grey’s Anatomy’?

According to Variety, Walsh will scrub in on January 29 for the episode titled “Strip That Down.”

“Exact plot details are currently being kept under wraps,” the outlet reported.

Eric Dane Shares Update On His ALS Diagnosis

“Grey’s Anatomy” star Eric Dane is opening up about why speaking publicly about his amyotrophic lateral sclerosis diagnosis feels more urgent than ever. Just a few days after appearing on “Brilliant Minds” as Matthew, a firefighter and 9/11 hero struggling to tell his wife he has ALS, the actor is now opening up his heart on the experience and his own health journey.

The guest role was special for Dane, as it marked his first on-screen appearance since announcing his diagnosis in April.

How Dane Connected His Real ALS Journey to His ‘Brilliant Minds’ Role

Dane discussed the emotional weight of playing an ALS patient and navigating the neurodegenerative disease in real life during a virtual Giving Tuesday panel with I AM ALS and Synapticure co-founders Brian Wallach and Sandra Abrevaya.

“Brilliant Minds” showrunner Michael Grassi and Dr. Daniela Lamas, who writes for and consults on the series, also joined the conversation.

While filming, Dane said the hardest part was separating himself from a character living something “so real” to him. Even so, the experience became meaningful. He said he felt “grateful” for how “cathartic” it turned out to be.

Actor Describes Staying Emotionally Strong in the Face of ALS

Dane bravely spoke candidly about the unexpected resilience he found in himself after his diagnosis.
As per E! Online, Dane said: “I have no reason to be in a good spirit at any time, on any given day, I don’t think anybody would blame me if I went upstairs in my bedroom, crawled under the sheets, and spent the next two weeks crying,” he said.

“And I was a little bit pleasantly surprised when I realized that I wasn’t built like that, because I thought for sure that was gonna be me.”

He called it “very encouraging” to discover he could keep a “buoyant spirit in the face of something so horrible.”

Why Dane Says His Story Now Belongs to the Public

Eric Dane Receives 10-Minute Standing Ovation

Although his appearance on “Brilliant Minds” was “one of a kind,” Dane said he is not sure he could recreate the experience for another project.

Still, he believes speaking out is no longer optional. He said he knows “it’s imperative that I share my journey with as many people as I can because I don’t feel like my life is about me anymore.”

The actor admitted this shift has challenged him. He said he has always felt he was a “pretty selfish person,” but now understands he cannot move forward thinking life is “all about me.”

He described his new outlook as “a propulsive sort of component to my existence.”

“You know, obviously, I have a family at home, and they’re the priority. But this is such a big deal to me,” he said.

Dane Pushes for Awareness and Change Around ALS

Dane said raising awareness about ALS has become central to his life.

“I make sure that people are aware of what ALS is and what it’s about, and more importantly, what we can do to combat it and improve the landscape, because it’s so rocky and littered with hurdles and bureaucracy and all this other nonsense that we’re trying to sift through so we can get to a place where we go, start working on solution,” he said.

For now, he continues to use his voice to push the conversation forward, both for patients and for their families. “Brilliant Minds” airs Mondays on NBC at 10 p.m. ET/PT.

Eric Dane, known to millions as Dr. Mark “McSteamy” Sloan from “Grey’s Anatomy,” is returning to television in a role that closely mirrors his real-life health battle.

The 53-year-old actor will guest star on NBC’s “Brilliant Minds,” where his character is introduced as “Bronx-Gen’s favorite silver fox,” a nickname coined by neurologist Dr. Oliver Wolf, played by Zachary Quinto.

BRILLIANT MINDS -- "Fire Fighter " Episode 209NBC
BRILLIANT MINDS — “Fire Fighter ” Episode 209

Dane revealed in April that he had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). In the November 24 episode, he plays Matthew, a firefighter navigating the same disease. According to Johns Hopkins, ALS causes the progressive degeneration of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, and there is currently no cure.

The Episode’s Storyline Hits Close to Home

“Brilliant Minds” creator Michael Grassi said the idea came together naturally when Dane’s team reached out. Grassi was also dealing with a “health emergency” in his family at the time, which shaped their early conversations.

“We started circling this idea of ‘How does a family navigate a difficult diagnosis?’” Grassi told USA TODAY. “There’s no rule book. There’s no right way or wrong way to do it.”

In the episode filmed in October, Matthew struggles to tell his ex-wife and daughter about his diagnosis because he fears becoming a burden. He is living at the firehouse, quietly depending on his colleagues’ support.

In one emotional scene, Matthew rejects Dr. Wolf’s recommendation to use a BiPAP machine to improve his breathing during sleep.

BRILLIANT MINDSNBC

“Well, we don’t have to make a decision right now,” Dr. Wolf says. “But…things are moving faster than we’d hoped, and we need to make a plan before we get into trouble.”

Matthew pushes back, saying, “I’m not having them deal with strapping me in and out of a machine at night. I got to draw the line.”

He later admits he hasn’t told his family the truth. “Nobody survives this,” he says. “We both know that, and I know how to take care of my family.”

Cast and Crew Honor Dane With a 10-Minute Standing Ovation

Grassi described Dane as “a joy” on set, noting that the actor arrived every day ready to collaborate. “Give me a hug,” Dane would tell him before filming.

“What was really fun,” Grassi added, “is every time we would call ‘Cut,’ there was so much laughter and banter between Eric and our cast.”

But the most powerful moment came after an emotional scene.

“I have never seen this happen in my entire career, but he essentially got a 10-minute standing ovation after shooting that scene,” Grassi said. “It was so beautiful and so honest and so real.”

He added that Dane’s vulnerability in telling the story “raises awareness and shows people that they’re not alone.”

Dane Vows to Keep Fighting for His Family

Outside the series, Dane has been advocating for ALS awareness. In September, he met with Rep. Eric Swalwell to discuss the disease and was filmed speaking passionately about the future he wants to see.

“I’m going to ring every bell,” Dane said. “I have two daughters at home. I want to see them graduate college, get married, maybe even have grandkids. I want to be there for all that so I’m going to fight until the last breath on this one.”

Dane shares daughters Billie, 15, and Georgia, 13, with his wife, Rebecca Gayheart.

Eric Dane, who revealed in April that he had been diagnosed with ALS, will guest star in the Monday, November 24 installment of “Brilliant Minds” as Matthew, a heroic firefighter facing the same devastating diagnosis.

In new photos from NBC Universal offer an intimate look at Matthew’s storyline as he struggles to share his ALS diagnosis.

According to the official synopsis for the episode, “The Firefighter”:

“Dr. Wolf helps a firefighter (Eric Dane) and his family navigate a life-changing diagnosis on Thanksgiving. Eric Dane plays “Matthew Ramati,” a heroic firefighter who struggles to share his ALS diagnosis with his family. Mädchen Amick is “Alicia Ramati,” a strong-willed woman who wears her emotions on her sleeve, especially when it comes to her firefighting ex-husband, Matthew (Dane). She’s not afraid to state her opinion and care for the ones she loves.”

ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is described by the Mayo Clinic as “a nervous system disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. ALS causes loss of muscle control.” While treatment cannot cure the disease, it may slow its progression.

Eric Dane’s guest role comes just months after he publicly confirmed his ALS diagnosis. In April, he told People, “I have been diagnosed with ALS. I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter.” The actor, 52, shares two daughters, Billie Beatrice and Georgia Geraldine, with his wife, Rebecca Gayheart.

Dane added, “I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to set of ‘Euphoria’ next week. I kindly ask that you give my family and I privacy during this time.” Production on season 3 of the HBO series was scheduled to begin on April 14.

His health challenges also led him to miss a planned “Grey’s Anatomy” reunion at the 77th Emmy Awards.

Dane explained he was “getting stitches” after losing balance and falling in his kitchen shortly before he was scheduled to present with former co-star Jesse Williams.

Dane joins a list of notable public figures diagnosed with ALS, including Aaron Lazar, John Driskell Hopkins, Eric Stevens, Joe Bonsall, Roberta Flack, Kenneth Mitchell, and Stephen Hawking.

Eric Dane’s special episode of “Brilliant Minds” airs Monday, November 24, on NBC.

Rebecca Gayheart is offering new insight into the complicated state of her relationship with Eric Dane. The two, who married in 2004 and share daughters Billie, 15, and Georgia, 13, have spent years navigating uncertainty. People reported in March 2025 Gayheart filed for divorce in 2018 but dismissed the petition in March 2025.

Less than a month later, Dane revealed he had been diagnosed with ALS. “I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter,” he told People at the time.

Since his diagnosis, they have presented a united front while focusing on their daughters. During the November 17 episode of “Broad Ideas with Rachel Bilson & Olivia Allen,” Gayheart spoke for the first time about where their relationship stands now.

‘We Show Up’: Gayheart Says Her Daughters Come First Amid Dane’s Illness

“I am definitely trying to show [my daughters] that we show up for people no matter what,” Gayheart said.

“And he is our family, he is your father. We show up and we try to do it with some dignity and some grace and just get through it, and that we will get through it the best we can. I mean, it’s super complicated for me.”

Gayheart said she and Dane have “been separated for eight years,” and shared that their daughters “live with me 100% of the time.”

“There’s been lots of just stuff, other stuff,” she said. “I try to stay optimistic, though, about it all. I’m trying to learn from it and role model, for them, how to go through something like this, which is really hard.”

Helping their daughters process Dane’s diagnosis has been one of her biggest challenges. “I don’t know if I’m doing it well or if I’m … doing it in the wrong way or the right way. I’m just showing up. I’m showing up, and I’m trying to be there for them, and I guess time will tell,” she said. “They’re good girls who are just going through a lot.”

Gayheart said she is “experiencing growth as a person” as she supports her ex through his illness.

“It’s all very humbling,” she explained. “And I think one piece of this that I hope I’m passing to my kids is the idea that you can show up for someone and be there for them, but you also have to show up for yourself, and that this is life. Life, sadly, is just moments, good and bad, strung together. There’s gonna be good ones, there’s gonna be bad ones, there’s gonna be exciting ones, it’s gonna be really sad.”

In September, she told People that her daughters are “really suffering” as they adjust to Dane’s health battle. “I don’t think I’m at a place yet where I can pull out a positive nugget. I’m not there yet,” she said.

Even so, she acknowledged that the diagnosis has affected their family dynamic. “Eric will always be my family, whether we’re married or not, or living in the same house or not,” she said. “We are closer, but we don’t like the reason why. It’s a horrible disease, and I wish that there was a cure.”

Dane Credits Gayheart as His Anchor Through the Toughest Season

Dane has also spoken openly about the support he receives from Gayheart. In June, he called her “my biggest champion,” and said she is the person he turns to the most.

“I call Rebecca. I talk to her every day,” he told Diane Sawyer. “We have managed to become better friends and better parents … I lean on her.”

Together, the two continue to work through a life-changing diagnosis, parenting, and a relationship that Gayheart describes simply as “super complicated.”

The beloved star revealed that he is officially cancer-free after being diagnosed with prostate cancer earlier this year.“Hi Friends, I’m blessed and grateful to be cancer-free,” Pickens wrote in a November 15 Instagram post. “Thanks so much for all the love and support! Get checked!”

His update comes only weeks after he first spoke about his diagnosis in an interview with Black Health Matters, where he revealed how deeply prostate cancer has affected his family.

Pickens explained that prostate cancer is something his family has faced for generations. “It’s not the kind of news anyone wants to hear, but to be honest, prostate cancer has run through my family,” he said. “My father had it. He had a lot of brothers; several of them had it. I would have been surprised if I hadn’t gotten it.”

He added that many relatives have lived long lives after their diagnoses. “I’ve got a 90-year-old first cousin, who’s still alive, actually, and he had it. His son has it, and a couple of his brothers had it. No one, as far as I know, has succumbed to it.”

Pickens said his early screening routine played an important role in catching the cancer quickly.

Early Testing Helped Doctors Detect His Cancer in Time

Pickens told Black Health Matters that he began getting annual physicals more than three decades ago. “I started getting my annual physical 34 years ago, and I started my PSA testing when I was 41. I’m 73 now,” he said.

His care team credited him for staying proactive. “My urologist said, ‘Because you were so diligent in that piece of your health, it was to your advantage. We were able to catch it so early because you were being tested.”

Pickens also revealed that he underwent a prostatectomy after receiving his diagnosis in January. “We caught it really early, and so they thought that would be the best route to take,” he said.

His Real-Life Diagnosis Mirrored Dr. Webber’s Storyline

Pickens’ own health journey echoed a major moment for his “Grey’s Anatomy” character. In the season 22 fall finale, Dr. Webber opened up to Dr. Miranda Bailey and revealed he had been diagnosed with cancer.

Pickens’ update has been met with an outpouring of support from longtime viewers who have followed both his real-life journey and Dr. Webber’s emotional storyline.

“Grey’s Anatomy” star James Pickens Jr. revealed he has been battling cancer.

Beloved for his decades-long role as Dr. Richard Webber, he has opened up about his real-life battle with prostate cancer — and he’s using his platform to champion the power of early screening.

The 71-year-old actor recently shared his story with Black Health Matters, emphasizing that he is living proof that early detection can save lives.

Pickens disclosed that prostate cancer runs in his family, and he’s been vigilant about his health for years.

He has been a staple on the show, appearing in all 22 seasons of the popular series.

Cancer Runs in His Family

The actor said the news of his diagnosis didn’t surprise him.

“It’s not the kind of news anyone wants to hear, but to be honest, prostate cancer has run through my family,” he added. “My father had it. He had a lot of brothers; several of them had it. I would have been surprised if I hadn’t gotten it.”

He revealed that he’s had annual physicals for more than three decades, starting PSA (prostate-specific antigen) testing when he was 41.

Earlier this year, elevated PSA levels prompted further tests. An MRI and biopsy led to the discovery of a tumor — thankfully, scans confirmed it hadn’t spread.

He underwent a prostatectomy, a minimally invasive surgery that removes the prostate, and was in the hospital for just one day.

Detection Is Key

Pickens noted that his cancer was a rare variant, but because it was caught early, doctors opted for a cautious but proactive plan.

“My urologist said, ‘Because you were so diligent in that piece of your health, it was to your advantage. We were able to catch it so early because you were being tested,’” Pickens shared.

Beyond sharing his personal experience, Pickens is also on a mission.

He partnered with Black Health Matters to create a PSA, encouraging Black men — who statistically face higher risks — to begin prostate screening around age 40.

He said, “Today, I am living proof that early detection works.”

Fans were quick to praise the star.

“Love him❤️ I cried during the end😭 This message is so important,” one user wrote.

Another added, “Such an important message – we must take care of our health & loved ones!”

The timing of his revelation is especially poignant. On “Grey’s Anatomy,” his character was recently diagnosed with cancer during the season 22 midseason finale.

The line between fiction and reality is clear — and Pickens is turning that overlap into a way to save lives.

Eric Dane Reunites With Rebecca Gayheart Amid ALS Battle

“Grey’s Anatomy” actor Eric Dane shared a quiet moment with his estranged wife, Rebecca Gayheart, in Los Angeles as he continues his battle with ALS. The 52-year-old was seen leaving a Hollywood sushi restaurant, with Gayheart and one of their daughters walking close beside him.

Photos and video obtained by the Daily Mail showed the family moving together at a gentle pace. A source told the outlet the outing was part of the family’s effort to give Dane “as many enjoyable moments as possible” as he manages his illness.

“Rebecca and her kids want to treat things with Eric, their dad, as normal as possible,” the insider said. “They want to have as many feel-good moments as they can while he is healthy enough to be out and about and able to do things.” See the photos here.

Family Staying Strong Through Difficult Times

The outing marked one of several family dinners the group plans to continue. “Going out to dinner is one of those moments,” the source added. “It’s something the family would do even if Eric weren’t sick.”

Gayheart, 54, who dismissed her divorce filing in March 2025, remains by his side with their two daughters, Billie, 15, and Georgia, 13. Friends say the family hopes to keep creating comforting memories together in the months ahead.

Dane’s ALS Diagnosis & Rapid Decline

ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a rare and incurable motor neuron disorder that affects roughly 5,000 Americans each year. Symptoms often appear gradually, with patients losing muscle function and mobility over time.

Dane reportedly first noticed weakness in his right hand in early 2024, thinking it was fatigue from texting. After months of medical testing and specialist consultations, he was officially diagnosed in April. By June, he had lost the use of his right arm.

While ALS patients typically have a life expectancy of three to five years, sources close to the actor say his decline has been “swift and painful.”

Despite the rapid progression of his illness, those close to Dane say he remains resilient. “So many people take things for granted, so many people don’t do anything because they are scared,” a friend told The Daily Mail.

Loved ones describe the actor as facing his condition “with quiet strength,” focusing on family and gratitude rather than fear. As the disease progresses, the family is reportedly committed to spending as much quality time together as possible.
