Dolly Parton Misses Honorary Oscar Weeks After Health Scare

Dolly Parton missed receiving her honorary Oscar in person just weeks after health concerns sparked worry among fans. The 79-year-old was unable to attend the 16th Academy Governors Awards on Sunday because of a scheduling conflict.

Even so, Parton remained part of the celebration. The iconic singer and former “The Voice” guest mentor appeared in a pre-recorded video introduced by actor Lily Tomlin.

She Shares Emotional Video Message About Family and Giving

In her video, Parton thanked the Academy for honoring her with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, which she called the “blessing of a lifetime.” She reflected on her upbringing in Tennessee and the lessons that shaped her.

“I grew up in a house with 12 kids,” she said. “Now that alone teaches you how important sharing is. Don’t get me wrong, we didn’t have that much to share, but my mama and daddy showed me that the more you give, the more blessings come your way.

“And I have tried my whole life to live by their example and I have been blessed more than I ever dreamed possible, like with this award tonight. From my heart to yours, I truly thank you,” she said.

Worries about Parton’s health grew earlier this year after she postponed her Las Vegas residency. Her sister also urged fans to pray for the Grammy-winning star, who was grieving the loss of her husband of 58 years, Carl Dean.

Parton later shut down the speculation and told fans she was on the mend.

“I ain’t dead yet!” she said in a video message. “I let a lot of things go that I should’ve been taking care of. So anyway, when I got around to it, the doctor said, ‘We need to take care of this. We need to take care of that.’ Nothing major, but I did have to cancel some things so I could be closer to home.”

Variety reported that health concerns kept her from attending the ceremony. However, her publicist told USA Today that the absence was due to a scheduling conflict and that the virtual appearance was planned.

Her Honorary Oscar Brings Her One Step Closer to EGOT Status

Tom Cruise, Debbie Allen, and Wynn Thomas also received honorary Oscars at the ceremony.

Parton’s award marked her first Oscar win. She had two past nominations for best original song, and the honor moved her closer to EGOT status, with only a Tony still to go.
